Mosul is a city in northern Iraq. Since 2014, it has been under the control of ISIL. Mosul is the last remaining major city in Iraq under IS control, and is currently undergoing a military operation led by the Iraqi government under Haider al-Abadi. Isil has controlled the city since June 2014, and no westerner has entered since. The Battle of Mosul, a military offensive to re-take the city, began in October 2016, and is the largest deployment of Iraqi forces since the 2003 invasion by U.S. and coalition forces.
Located some 400 km (250 mi) north of Baghdad, the original city stands on the west bank of the Tigris River, opposite the ancient Assyrian city of Nineveh on the east bank, but the metropolitan area has grown to encompass substantial areas on both the "Left Bank" (east side) and the "Right Bank" (west side) as the two banks are described in the local language.
